Mumtaz and her family rented a house in a peri-urban slum  area of Keranigang. Her husband and six of her seven children had congenital bilateral cataracts. The other child is deaf. Even though her husband was visually impaired he still managed to earn a small wage  by working as a day labour at a launch terminal. Because of their disabilities, the children were all very dependent on Mumtaz for all their daily activities, and as a result she was unable to leave her house for work.

Mumtaz joined a women’s group of SAJIDA and subsequently took out a micro credit loan to start a small cooking business ,which she managed from her home, providing meals for  day laborers and rickshaw pullers three times a day.

SAJIDA became aware of the family through Mumtaz’s involvement in its Micro Credit Program.  One of the staff of  SAJIDA Health Program visited Mumtaz’s family  and discussed about the possible treatment options which may improve the eyesight of Mumtaz’s husband and her children. Initially the family was  hesitant , concerned about the cost, but after more information and counselling they agreed to the treatment plan. Staff of  SAJIDA Health Program arranged for the family to be transported to the hospital for assessment using modern ophthalmology equipment. Surgery was then performed by a well-known ophthalmology surgeon free of charge. As a result of the operation, Mumtaz’s children and her husband  had their vision restored. The outcome for the family has been dramatic – not only have they regained their eye-sight; they are now self-reliant and can contribute positively to the social and economic wellbeing of their family. Mumtaz and her husband now plan to send their children to school.

This initiative was made possible  due to  a partnership between ORBIS International and SAJIDA. This collaboration has helped SAJIDA train personnel, develop infrastructure, set up  modern technology and equipment through which  a poor and destitute family  could  have an opportunity, not only to access better health and vision, but also the opportunity to improve their socio-economic position in the society. Made them better equipped to deal with the challenges of a better living.
